There’s a specific kind of person I meet all the time in my clinic.
They never miss appointments.
They smile politely, even when they’re hurting.
They say “I’m fine,” even when their blood pressure tells me otherwise.
They’re the ones holding it all together—for everyone.
Mothers. Teachers. Caregivers. Leaders. The “strong friend.” The one people call in a crisis. The one who rarely gets asked, “But how are YOU?”
And sometimes, it’s not until their body begins to break down that they finally give themselves permission to rest.
This article is for them.
This article might be for you.
As a physician, I’ve come to believe this: the body is always speaking, even when we aren’t.
High blood pressure. Fatigue. Headaches. Insomnia. These aren’t just medical issues. They’re also warning lights—gentle, then insistent—saying:
“You are carrying too much.”
“You haven’t exhaled in months.”
“You need to be cared for, too.”
So many of the people I treat are not sick because they’re weak.
They’re sick because they’ve been too strong for too long.
